The European Union Military Committee (EUMC) is to visit Karlskrona on 14–15 September for an informal meeting on maritime surveillance.

The EUMC, which is the EU’s highest military body, consists of the Chiefs of Defence of the Member States, whose military representatives will attend the meeting.

As holder of the Presidency of the EU, Sweden has a number of priority issues in the area of defence. One such issue is maritime surveillance, where the Government recommends a move towards increased cooperation between EU Member States’ civilian and military authorities, and also between countries. There are numerous benefits to be gained from such cooperation, not least financially but also from a security standpoint.

For this reason the EUMC is meeting in Karlskrona to discuss the matter. The Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish Coast Guard will present their model of cooperation, which will serve as inspiration for the continued discussions.
As a final point in the programme, Blekinge Wing F17 from Ronneby will give an air display of the JAS Gripen.
