German Ambassador Martin Hecker announced his plans to obtain permission to meet with Aleksandr Kozulin, an opposition politician currently serving his five-and-a-half-year prison sentence in the Vitebsk region.
While talking to reporters in Minsk on Tuesday, the diplomat said he had been tasked by the German government with meeting with the former presidential candidate sentenced to prison on what many view as politically motivated charges.
Dr. Hecker recalled that the European Union had repeatedly demanded the release of Dr. Kozulin.
The ambassador said he had visited imprisoned Belarusian politicians before, noting that such visits had benefits for the convicts, the German and Belarusian governments.
