Presidential elections in Kazakhstan are to take place in December 2005

Igor Rogov said this at the meeting of Constitutional Council in Astana. The Constitutional Council declares its decision on the date of Presidential elections in Kazakhstan. Presidential elections in Kazakhstan are to take place in December 2005, as was decided by the Constitutional Council of the republic. The decision was made at the third meeting. Consideration of this issue began after the address of a group of members of the parliament’s lower house – the Majilis – questioning the interpretation of the Constitution’s articles related to the determination of the date of elections.

- The Constitutional Council believes that the next elections of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan should be held on the first Sunday of December 2005. In this case, according to clause two of the Constitution’s forty second article, the elected President has to take the oath on the second Wednesday of January, this means on January 11, 2006, said Igor Rogov, chairman, Constitutional Council of RK.

Chairman of the Constitutional Council also stated that the resolution will enter into force from the date of its adoption, that means from August 19, 2005. It is not subject to appeal and is compulsory all throughout the republic’s territory and definitive. The right to declare the date of presidential elections belongs to the Majilis. The Parliament’s lower house should make it not later than the second Sunday of September.
