Rice Comments on Conflicts, Military Bases

Published: 5 July 2005 y., Tuesday

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in her opening remarks at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's 14th Annual Session in Washington on July 1, that the conflicts in the Caucasus and Moldova should be solved through peaceful means.

“Elsewhere in our OSCE community, frozen conflicts in the Caucasus and Moldova have yet to be resolved through peaceful settlements. And tensions in these regions also must be reduced through Russia’s fulfillment of its Istanbul Commitments. The recent agreement between Russia and Georgia is a positive step toward fulfilling those commitments,” Condoleezza Rice said.

Georgia and Russia agreed on May 30 that Russia will pull out its two military bases from Batumi and Akhalkalaki in the course of 2008.
