Ukraine finishes WTO talks with China

Published: 22 August 2005 y., Monday

Ukraine has accomplished negotiations on its WTO accession with China, economy minister Sergey Teryokhin has reported. According to him, this is a step paving the way to WTO accession for Ukraine. Only technical issues are to be solved, he stressed. The most significant problems was granting a market economy status to China, Teryokhin added. "After the European Union grants the same status to Ukraine, we will be ready to do the same in respect of China," he stressed. According to Teryokhin, the EU is going to solve the problem at a summit of the two parties.

Ukraine will have to finish talks on the issue with the US and Australia. After that it would be clear, whether Kiev could join the WTO before the end of 2005. Kiev has already accomplished talks on its WTO accession with 38 countries out of 42 WTO members.
