Jap Business Research Investment Opportunities in Bulgaria

Published: 28 August 2005 y., Sunday

A Japanese business delegation is on a visit to Bulgaria to research the opportunities of business here.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin met Wednesday with Hiroshi Tsukamoto, President of Japan External Trade Organization - JETRO.

The Japanese businessman informed the foreign minister about the forthcoming visit of a business delegation this autumn and their interest in production of car spare parts, electronic equipment, etc.

Bulgaria has been struggling to reconstruct business and commercial ties with Japan after a sharp drop in trade turnover from USD 48.5 M in 1996 to USD 32 M in 2002.

Japan's total direct investment in the Balkan state stands at just USD 9.1 M, but the "country of the rising sun" has been interested in Bulgarian yoghurt, wine, honey, and other traditional products.

Meanwhile, it became known that the Japanese government is ready to finance Bulgarian infrastructure projects that are well-developed and secured with a state guarantee. This was announced at the meeting between the newly elected Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Assen Gagauzov and Japan's Ambassador to Bulgaria Koichiro Fukui.
