A powerful and complete remote solution

Published: 21 March 1999 y., Sunday
3Com Corporation maintained its global leadership in the remote access market in 1998, claiming 29 percent of the worldwide market, the company announced. The Dell _Oro Groups 1998 Remote Access Market Analysis, published February 22, reports that 3Com ended 1998 with a 29-percent share of the worldwide remote access market, which includes both access concentrators and access servers. 3Com held a 31-percent share of the access concentrator market, and a 17-percent share of the access server market. "There are more than 6 million 3Com® ports installed around the globe, connecting an estimated 85 million people to connect to the Internet," said Irfan Ali, senior vice president and general manager, 3Com Carrier Systems. "Our award-winning Total Control® multi-service access platform provides service providers with a powerful and complete remote solution, including support for remote access, IP telephony and virtual private networking applications." The Dell _Oro report places 3Com and Ascend Communications in a virtual tie for overall remote access market share leadership, with Cisco placing third. 3Com holds a solid position in both the service provider (35 percent market share) and enterprise markets (22 percent). "Market share figures vary by research firm and are affected by whether or not mid-range access router revenue is counted as access concentrator revenue. Dell Oro does not include them," Ali said. "We believe that mid-range access routers are sold primarily to enterprises and that they are not scalable enough to cost-effectively offer high-density dial access solutions for services providers." 3Coms award-winning Total Control multi-service access platform provides telecommunications carriers, service providers, and large enterprises a powerful and complete networking solution, including support for remote access, VoIP, and virtual private networking applications. The platform is designed for service reliability, using redundant power supplies and modular application cards to prevent a single point of failure. In addition, its modular architecture supports hot-swapping of interface and application cards so that the system remains live and online, thus minimizing network downtime.
With more than 200 million customers worldwide, 3Com Corporation connects more people to information in more ways than any other networking company. 3Com delivers innovative information access products and network system solutions to large, medium and small enterprises; carriers and network service providers; PC OEMs; and consumers.
