AOL, Yahoo! Split Weekly Nielsen/NetRatings

Combined, though, AOL properties are most visited sites on the Web. For the week ending August 20, AOL sites drew 28.6 million home unique visitors while Yahoo! brought in 25.7 million unique viewers. Office users, however, preferred Yahoo! with 13.6 million unique viewers to AOL's 13.1 viewers. Combining both home and office users gives AOL 41.6 million unique viewers for the week to Yahoo!'s 39.4 million unique viewers. In the advertiser-coveted category of time spent on site, Yahoo! (0:30:15) and eBay (0:52:51) dominated AOL (0:13:31). Overall for the week, according to Nielsen, Internet users logged onto the Web an average of 8.5 times and visited 9.5 unique sites. The average time spent on each site was 29 minutes. Following AOL and Yahoo! in home unique viewers were (3.) MSN, 19.8 million viewers; (4.) Microsoft, 16.6 million viewers; (5.) Lycos, 9.5 million viewers; (6.) Excite@Home, 8.9 million viewers; (7.) GO Network, 7.6 million viewers; (8.) eUniverse Network, 5.2 million viewers; (9.) Time Warner, 5.1 million viewers; and (10.) eBay, 5.0 million viewers. In the business viewer market led by Yahoo! and AOL, MSN (11.2 million); Microsoft (9.8 million); Lycos (6.0 million); Excite (5.5) million; and GO (5.2 million) follow in the same order as in the home viewer ratings. Time Warner moves up to number eight with 3.9 million viewers while eUniverse and eBay are replaced by AltaVista (3.6 million) and Amazon (3.2 million). The Dulles, Va.-based AOL was also the Web's sixth overall home advertiser for the week with 140.9 million impressions. Leading the home advertisers wasTRUSTe with 544.1 million impressions followed by Microsoft (343.5 million), Yahoo! (209.8 million), Next card (168.8 million), AllAdvantage (146.1 million), AOL, eBay (98.9 million), Amazon (95.7 million),GetSmart (76.9 million), and Barnes and Noble (64.9 million). In the business market, TRUSTe again led the pack with 389.3 million impressions followed by Microsoft (228.2 million), AllAdvantage (150.7 million), Yahoo! (142.1 million), Next card 98.7 million), mySimon (67.3 million), GetSmart (65.1 million), Amazon (64.3 million), AOL 62.8 million), and Datek (48.7 million).
