Lithuania in the world
The recently launched Lithuania Web Portal www.lietuva.lt has already been visited by the Internet users from ninety states. The majority of them have been from the neighbouring states (Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Russia) as well as the major European states (Germany, France, Sweden), and also from the states that provide home to significant numbers of Lithuanians (Great Britain, USA, and Ireland). Internet users from farther countries, such as Brazil, Israel, China, Japan, and South Korea, have searched for information on Lithuania’s website as well.

14.5 thousand Internet users have searched for Lithuania’s name and its equivalent in other languages on the web per day, which makes up 0.5 million queries per month. With the launch of Lithuania Web Portal, these queries are being directed to the website www.lietuva.lt first. The website is also accessible on the address www.lithuania.lt, www.lituanie.lt, www.litauen.lt, and www.litwa.lt. For the meantime, the website is accessible in four languages: Lithuanian, English, French, and Chinese. The latter has been chosen on the occasion of the Olympic Games: the website has been launched on the opening day of the Olympic Games, and so far it is the only website in Lithuania fully functioning in Chinese. Next year, the website is planned to be made accessible in German and Russian as well.

The website that presents Lithuania focuses a lot on the potential visitors to Lithuania: it offers a calendar of the forthcoming events, hotel network, leisure and entertainment centres. Nevertheless, unlike the majority of websites of the neighbouring states, it is not oriented only towards the promotion of tourism: it aims to inform about what happens in Lithuania and what matters to our country. Moreover, the website is relevant not only to the foreign citizens but also to Lithuanians living abroad. Therefore the website constantly updates information on major events in Lithuania.

The website also presents facts about Lithuania’s history, its form of government and administrative system, as well as the process of its international integration. The website focuses much on economy and business, and presents information that could be of interest for investors. It also reports news in the areas of research, culture, and sport.

Lithuania Web Portal is “live”: both its contents and graphic design are being constantly updated. The latter is being matched with events topical for Lithuania, such as Millennium of Lithuania or the Beijing Olympics. Graphic design also matches the season: currently the website reflects the atmosphere of a colourful and sunny autumn.
