So-called 'bam-raids' on Aussie ATMs get bankers' attention

Published: 4 February 2009 y., Wednesday

Banks in Australia are rushing to install gas detectors into their ATMs, as gas-explosive attacks on ATMs in the country continue to climb.

"This kind of attack is extremely dangerous and has a high probability of failure," said Terry Millett, chief executive of one of the building societies affected by the ATM attacks. "We are now well advanced with the installation of gas detection devices in our ATMs to complement the other security measures already in place to prevent further attacks." The gas detectors work by sealing the ATM before enough gas is injected to blow it up, and then it sounds an alarm.
