Tech CU launches GPS-based ATM locator

Published: 26 February 2009 y., Thursday

Technology Credit Union has teamed with LocatorSearch to introduce a global positioning system (GPS) download to help members find surcharge-free ATMs.

Tech CU members can download a GPS Points of Interest (POI) file from the credit union's online ATM location finder. The POI can be downloaded for several supported GPS device types, including TomToms and Garmins.

Members can then use their GPS devices to find, and get directions to, over 60,000 surcharge-free ATMs around the US, including at Costco and 7-Eleven stores, Walgreens, CVS and Rite-Aid Pharmacies, and Exxon and Chevron gas stations.

“We understand our members have busy lives and are often on the road, without access to a computer,” says Kathleen Litman, VP, marketing, Tech CU. “For that reason, Tech CU is committed to pushing our services to mobile platforms wherever possible.”

Earlier this month Dutch bank ING launched an application for T-Mobile's G1 Google phone that combines the built-in GPS technology with the handset's compass and camera to 'point' users in the direction of the nearest bank ATM.

The beta version of the app is available for free through Android Market, Google's version of the iPhone App Store.
