The international conference „Information Society 2000“ began

Today the second international scientific practical conference "Information Society 2000" has begun. Information society in Lithuania is just in the beginning, so there is a big need in such conference. In recent time the society and Lithuanian Government show a huge attention to IT sector. This was confirmed by Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, who made a welcome speech in the beginning of this conference. He stressed the need to improve the situation of possibility of common users to acces the internet and full participation in e-buisiness. He was also concerned about eliminating the so called "computer illiteracy" which is very high in Lithuania. (Speaking about facts, only 300 000 from 3,7 million of Lithuania's population use internet). The Prime Minister also expressed the consern about current situation of education and possibilities to acces internet. He reminded the actions of the Government in order to transfer the Government on-line (speaking about e-Government project). During two days of the conference a lot of presentations will be made both in English and Lithuanian languages. A very important document was announced by the President of InfoBalt Association Robertas Tamulevičius. The Declaration of the Right to Internet demands to guarantee the access to internet for all users, not excluding incapacitated or old people. This should become a proposal to ammend the Constitution of Lithuania. It will last for two days.
