According to report of the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT), in the third quarter of the past year, in comparison with the respective period of 2008, the number of users connected to the Internet via optical fiber lines grew by 64.38 per cent and reached 223.1 thousand.
For the first time in Lithuania more users have used this Internet technology than any other, including xDSL, mobile computer connection, cable television networks and other (not including mobile phone connections (WAP).
“According to all parameters, the optical fiber connection outpaces all Internet technologies known so far both in quality and speed. The users’ choice is a perfect illustration of this. Obviously, with the increasing amount of transferable data, popularity of video and audio broadcasts via Internet, the optical fiber connection will become the dominant technology,” asserts Jurgita Guobytė, the Head of the Commerce at Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras, providing Skynet – an optical fiber Internet service.
With reference to RRT data, in the third quarter of the past year, in comparison with the respective period of 2008, the total number of the Internet subscribers had increased by 15.77 per cent up to 777.9 thousand. For example, the subscribers connected via xDSL lines constituted 6 per cent, while via cable television networks – 19 per cent.
Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras is the first company in Lithuania which had undertaken to install the optical fiber Internet already since 1998. Currently the company is the third in the country according to the number of subscribers using this technology (11 per cent of all subscribers connected via optical fiber lines).
“This year, as well as the previous year, we are planning to further improve quality and speed of the connection. Recently, our network bandwidth on foreign networks has reached the speed of 1.8 Gb/s. We will announce some good news to our business clients soon, as they will be able to use the Internet that is twice as fast with the price unaffected,” states J. Guobytė.
Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras offers not only the fiber-based Internet access, but also services such as a fixed IP telephony and an interactive IP television Penki TV.
