The internet camera at the day-care “Gandriukas“ (“Baby-stork“) became a pleasing daily round

Published: 5 June 2004 y., Saturday

In the existing for 15 years day-care “Gandriukas“ (Fabijoniðkiø St. 7, Vilnius) racket more than two hundreds “baby-storks“. The mindful governesses of the day-care not only dry-nurse the children confided to them by parents, but also nurture them, educate children‘s sporting activity, creative work, musical ability, present to information technologies. The modern day-care takes care of children experience in the necessary knowledge and modern technologies in their future learning at school.

With an exercion of a directress of the “Gandriukas“ Edita Nemeikðienë and the company group “Penki kontinentai“ the project of e-day-care is implemented.

A video camera was installed at the day-care two months ago, with its help you can see the day-care group “Drugelis“ (“Butterfly“) online for 24 hours at the web-site www.gandriukas.lt.

The governess R. Mickevièienë says about the group, that in it “live“ 22 babies. Most of them go the day-care for four years. They will be the eldest in the “Gandriukas“ next year. According to the governess all children are friendly, active, live, but not very disciplined, especially boys. But more of them go in for basketball coterie “Lietus“ (Rain) and will be defending the good day-care‘s name at the next year basketball competition. The children are singing in the day-care pop choir “Gandriukai“, dancing ballroom dancing. Each day is noisy and jolly in the group because of the crowd of children, during the year only a few of the children were ill.

“There are five families with newborns and children from these families could stay at home with their parents, but it is important to them to get to know something new each day, play with other children, therefore they are always with us,“ – R. Mickevièienë shared her impressions. “We have got plenty of new plans and ideas for the future. And when we will be on vacation somewhere in an amazing place we will be missing the “Drugelis“ group and willing to return to the “Gandriukas““.

According to the lot the video camera was installed in the “Drugelis“ group. To the words of the directress Edita Nemeikðienë, governess R. Mickevièienë made no objection, but was a little anxcious about it.

“We felt strange and gingerly first. But soon we got used to the camera. Parents‘ and grandparents‘ telephone calls from all Lithuania kept up our spirits. Many of them wanted to see their grandson or daughter at the moment and they were calling, joking, that is why the camera became the pleasing daily round,“ – says the governess of the “Drugelis“. “Children from the other groups after we installed the camera were coming to us to see it and to wave to the governesses which were watching them in the cabinet. It was an amusement for everybody. Chidren, parents, governesses, cooks, janitors had their eyes glued to the computer‘s monitor.“

Generally the parents watch their children at morning at 9-10 o‘clock. Little beggars have breakfast at this time, also it is the time for educational work. “Children remember, that parents can watch them and wave to the cam, - tells the governess, - when the child is ill and can‘t be at the day-care it watches the friends on the internet and then tells us what it had observed.“

The directress of the day-care center Edita Nemeikðienë says, that parents can watch their children using the intenet camera. They can see what their child is doing, is it sad or happy, is it active in the group. Also, certainly, closer contact spring up between parents and educators. The cam forced everybody to gear up and plan work in a more effective way.

“If we could have more cams we would install them in the hall where all holidays and sport shows take place. We think that the camera forces to gear up and adds strain. Sometimes it is good, but sometimes...“ – states E. Nemekðienë. “Living in the modern world of information technologies we have to try the suggestions and the merits of the electronic world.“

The idea to equip the video camera was met with approval and disapproval. Some parents think, that as children as governesses are restricted, because they being watched all the time. Some parents are happy with the opportunity to see their children ant to take pictures of them. They get used to the camera and know when does their child play or eat. Almost all parents are working, so the online transmission helps to be close to the child at any time of the day.

The parents are happy with this project and the idea of the web-site. They can create the mininetworks with pictures of their children, who can observe friends and their new toys and bicycles.
