American kidnapped in Chechnya

Published: 11 January 2001 y., Thursday
An American citizen working for the international medical relief organization Medicins Sans Frontieres has been kidnapped in Chechnya, a statement from the group said Wednesday. KENNY GLUCK was traveling in a four-car convoy of medical aid workers in western Chechnya when unidentified men attacked the group, the organization said. Gluck was pulled from his car and forced into one of the attackers’ vehicles, which drove away. Other foreign and local employees traveling in the group managed to escape unharmed, the statement from the organization’s Amsterdam office said. Russian news agencies quoted Russian military sources as saying another American, Jonathan Littell of the aid agency Action Against Hunger, suffered a light head wound in the attack. Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) “is extremely concerned about the fate of their colleague and is outraged by this direct attack on a clearly marked humanitarian convoy,” the statement said. Details on Gluck’s age and hometown were not immediately available. Russia’s chief military commander in Chechnya, Lt.Gen. Ivan Babichev, chastised the aid workers for operating in Chechnya without a military escort, the Interfax news agency reported.
