From Luis Figo to David Villa footballers are urging people to vote in the European elections this week. They have been joined by other football stars and leading cyclists in supporting participation in the European Parliamentary elections being held from 4-7 June.

For legendary Portuguese footballer Luis Figo “there is no victory without effort and no democracy without elections”.

The current captain of the Romanian national football team and Inter Milan player Christian Chivu thinks that European elections will decide the “future of our children”.

The top scorer of Euro 2008, Spanish player David Villa says he is hoping for a high turnout in the elections to secure “a European future” and Carlos Marchena reminds us that “every vote counts”. Dutch player Hedwiges Maduro of Ajax underlines that elections are about different opinions being expressed.

Luxembourg cycling brothers Andy and Fränk Schleck urge young people to vote, especially in time of crisis and note that younger generations are more likely to see the result.
