Belarus ranks 62nd in the newest Human Development report published by the United Nations. Norway, Sweden, Austria, Canada and the Netherlands are at the top of the survey, which covered 177 countries.
The Baltic States got the highest ranking among the post-Soviet countries: Estonia was in 36th place, Lithuania in 41st and Latvia in 50th.
Ukraine ranked 70th, Kazakhstan 78th, Armenia 82nd, Turkmenistan 86th, Azerbaijan 91st, Georgia 97th, Uzbekistan 107th, Kyrgyzstan 110th, Moldova 113th and Tajikistan 116th.
Belarus was shown to have a life expectancy at birth of 69.9 years, midway between Japan with 81.5 years and Zambia with 32.7 years.
The UN human development indices are based on per-capita incomes, the quality of healthcare and education and life expectancy. The life expectancy figures contained in this year’s report draw on the 2002 data.
