'Play to Stop – Europe for climate' – a campaign giving young Europeans a chance to learn and talk about climate change and the environment.
From July to December 2009, the 'Play to Stop – Europe for climate' campaign will encourage young people from around Europe to get more involved in fighting global warming. It will run in 11 EU countries – Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Sweden and the UK.
Led jointly by the EU and the MTV music channel, the campaign should give young Europeans the opportunity to learn, talk and exchange ideas ahead of the upcoming UN conference on climate change. As well as a website, publications and commercials, there will be three concerts featuring international artists, in Stockholm, Budapest and Copenhagen – to be broadcast on MTV.
The 15th UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen (7-18 December 2009) will bring together nearly 200 countries in an attempt to reach a new agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2012. At the conference, the EU will reaffirm the ambitious targets set in 2008 for increasing energy efficiency and establishing a low-carbon economy.
The EU is aiming for a 20% cut in greenhouse emissions and in energy consumption by 2020. And it wants 20% of its energy needs to be met from renewable sources, with a switch away from fossil fuels.
This campaign should give young Europeans a chance to voice their opinions in the run-up to the conference, which will be crucial for the future of the planet and its inhabitants.
