The Environmental Protection Club has already gathered 4,500 signatures in support of a moratorium on the construction project in Riga's Old Town until such time as a plan for the preservation of the historic Old Town has been worked out and approved, LETA was told by Environmental Protection Club President Arvids Ulme. Ulme expressed hope that at least 10,000 signatures supporting the halt of construction works in Old Town Riga would be gathered before the inaugural meeting of the new Riga City Council, whereit would submit proposals for review to the council.
The Environmental Protection Club was authorized to set up tents on Skarnu Street on St. Peter's Church square until March 20 for the signature drive. The Environmental Protection Club will be seeking the opinions of Rigans on the issue daily between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.
