More Than 30,000 Rally for Ukrainian Opposition Candidate

Published: 19 September 2004 y., Sunday
Thousands of Ukrainians have rallied in Kiev in support of opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The candidate addressed the crowd of at least 30,000 people and denounced the current administration at Saturday's rally in the main square of the capital. Mr. Yushchenko's appearance came shortly after his release from a Vienna hospital for what campaign officials say was a deliberate poisoning. Officials also say the opposition had to cancel a rally scheduled for Saturday in the eastern city of Kharkiv after equipment for the event was destroyed overnight. Recent opinion polls put Mr. Yushchenko ahead of the government-supported candidate, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, in the October 31 vote. The Council of Europe has urged Ukraine to keep the election free and fair.
