Dying gangster Reggie Kray is to be freed from jail on compassionate grounds, Home Secretary Jack Straw ruled today.
Published:
26 August 2000 y., Saturday
The decision follows confirmation from a hospital consultant that Kray, 67, is gravely ill and his life expectancy is a matter of weeks, the Home Office said, "We are satisfied that there is no risk of him committing further offences."
The former East End crime lord, who has served 32 years behind bars, is currently being treated for cancer of the bladder at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
He is serving 30 years for murder following his conviction in March 1969, and will be released on a license which will state where he must live. The actual time of his release has not been confirmed.
