Review of Wincor World 2005

Under blue skies and amid cool temperatures, buses began delivering the 7,500 people who are expected to make their trek to Paderborn for Wincor World 2005. Businesspeople from 50 countries and more than 70 vendors — including Fujitsu Siemens, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems — are attending Wincor World this year. Now in its fifth year, Wincor World offers Wincor Nixdorf’s global partners a chance to present "future-oriented" products and solutions for the retail and financial industries. The show, themed "Vision at Work," is being held in the Welle Messezentrum (Exhibition Center), where it is occupying 10,000 square meters. And Wincor's partners are exhibiting products and services geared toward "visions" in security and channel integration, to name a couple. For the financial industry Wincor is demonstrating how its ProClassic/Enterprise multichannel software — which connects self-service, branch and call-center channels on one platform — can be used to bring financial cash processes to the self-service world in a customer-oriented manner. Wincor also introduced its ProCash 4000, a new compact cash-recycling system. The system has been designed for self-service use and is intended for deployment in banks for deposit and withdrawal transactions. For the retail industry Wincor’s Store Vision program — a long-term program that’s been extended by components with upstream retail processes in the supply-and-demand chain — is being featured as well. With its new Store Communication Framework, which has been introduced during the show, Wincor has developed a solution that optimizes data availability in retail operations and eliminates dependence on IT tools from individual suppliers, according to news release. The solution enables the flexible networking of applications from various vendors and is built upon the Store Vision program. Numerous retailers today face huge challenges in managing their complex and heterogeneous IT infrastructures. As a result, they are forced to connect new and existing devices and applications via individual interfaces. The need to deal with a variety of different interfaces leads to greater complexity and higher maintenance and support costs, not to mention greater room for error. The SCF solution serves as a central communications platform for collecting, integrating and distributing all application data. While module solutions ensure the flow of data between the special tools of individual vendors, SCF is designed to operate across applications and vendors. Information from all areas, such as internal merchandise management and CRM data, customer data generated at the POS or kiosk terminal, can be centrally connected and bundled via SCF. Other highlights in the retail category included: "ReVendo," functionality- and visually-improved reverse vending systems; a starter-kit for RFID technology; a complete solutions package for controlling supply-chain processes; the Certo kiosk terminal; and a demonstration of comprehensive integration of self-service systems within postal service IT environments. Security Munich-based Crytomathic GmbH has three of its core products on display — its Authenticator, Certification Authority and Key Management System. Authenticator is an anti-phishing solution that targets the need for two-factor authentication. It’s a secure Internet solution that provides two-factor authentication with tamper-resistant hardware protection for keys. Authentication methods include SMS, one-time passwords, secure tokens, mobile readers and cards, and scrape-off tokens. Certification Authority issues and manages certificates for end-users, service providers, applications and appliances. It also issues certificates for Web browsers’ digital signatures, secure e-mail, authentication and VPN log-on, Windows 2000 smart-card log-on, the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance and SSL/TLS servers and clients, to name a few. Pinpointing stolen ATMs quickly with GPS was also highlighted in the security category. On Jan. 26, workshops covered Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Services platform, ultra-thin clients in the bank branch and ideal storage solutions for the savings market. Karl-Heinz Stiller, Wincor’s president and chief executive officer, addressed attendees during his presentation, "Move Faster than the World Around You." During the presentation, Stiller mentioned Wincor’s positive sales and financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2005 ended Dec. 31. According to a news release, Wincor’s net sales increased 16.8 percent and operating profit increased 24.1 percent during Q1. Innovation Day: The Future of Store Sales Innovation Day: The Future of Store Sales was held Jan. 27 in collaboration with the BÖrsen-Zeitung financial newspaper and the Fraunhofer Institute, which develops microelectronics and information and communication technology. Innovation Day topics included the future of branch and store sales, ways banks and retailers can increase profits and discreet banking versus the bank as a marketplace — using branch design as a means of success.   • Center of monitoring with integrated ProView, “ATMeye” and PDS systems in it;
  • “SmartSafe” application with monitoring function;
  • payment for services by self-service equipment;
  • implementation of money deposit and EMV functions employing PC1500xe with “Side Car”.
