The investigation of alleged Nazi Konrads Kalejs will formally continue even though he died last month in Australia. Latvian prosecutors charged Kalejs with genocide for allegedly taking part in the murder of Jews during the 1941-44 Nazi occupation of Latvia. But he died recently in Australia before he could be extradited to face trial. He was 88.
Prosecutor Eriks Zvejnieks was quoted as telling the Riga-based newspaper that there was no legal mechanism for closing cases against alleged war criminals even though there was no chance of there ever being a trial; posthumous trials are not permitted under Latvian law.
