The Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko has warned the country is on the verge of civil war.
He told parliament the president, Leonid Kuchma and his allies were responsible for the situation and trying to steal the election. However MPs' who had been hoping to pass a motion calling the election illegal were unable to hold a vote because those supporting the official winner of the election stayed away.
Nevertheless Yushchenko, surrounded by supporters was sworn in as the next President of Ukraine.
He swore allegiance to the citizens of Ukraine putting his hand on a copy of the constitution.
Despite the cheers around parliament the swearing-in was purely symbolic since officially the Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich won Sunday's Presidential election by 3 percentage points
