11th Open FIDE World Senior Championship

Published: 22 October 2001 y., Monday
The eleventh Open FIDE World Senior Championship started on the 16th of October in Arco (Italy) and will last till the 28th of October. Donatas Lapienis, who has been the sixth in the European Senior Chess Championship, is representing Lithuania there. 163 men and 18 women are participating in this tournament. Men have gathered from nearly thirty countries and the majority of them – 53 - are representing Germany... The Championship shall be played in 11 rounds of the Swiss System with 60 moves in 3 hours each, 2h x 40 moves + 1 h x 20 moves + 30 minutes for each player until the end of the game. The results after 4 rounds are as follows: three players who have not yet suffered a defeat and have 4 points are sharing 1-3 places. Their names are Josef Kruek from Germany, and international grand masters Ratmir Kholmov from Russia and Janis Klovans from Latvia. Donatas Lapienis has only two points after four rounds, but, as the tournament is not ending yet, we hope that he will reach at least similar results as he did in the European Senior Chess Championship. Donatas will meet another chess player from Germany – Geunter Klempt, who also has two points. Geunter has a significantly lower rating and we hope that this fact will lead to a victory of our player, which will allow Donatas improve his position in the standings. All the information about this tournament you will find at: www.arcoworldchess.com
