Doping tests in Moscow

Published: 14 December 2001 y., Friday
FIDE presents the Medical Commission's Report about the doping tests that were done during the World Chess Championships 2001. Pedro Barrera was elected Chairperson of the Medical Commision and he was responsible for all the procedures. First of all, the facilities at the Kremlin where the tests were going to be carried out were inspected to see whether they fulfilled the requirements. Then the procedure of doping control was explained to the arbiters and players. 10% of the total players were going to be tested (20 in total). On November 30, 2001 8 players were tested. They were selected at random. On December 6, 2001 the remaining 12 players were tested to complete the grand total of 20. Among them 12 were the 4 women semi-finalists and 8 men quarter finalists. The Chairperson of Medical Commission is happy to inform that the tests of these 20 players tested for the first time in a World Chess Championship were negative to any doping prohibited substances. Therefore it is so important to publish worldwide these results to let the sport world and IOC know that chess is a very drugs clean sport.
