FOOTBALL: WINNING WARM-UP FOR KAUNAS

Published: 28 July 2003 y., Monday
Martin O'Neill's men travel to Lithuania on Wednesday for a tricky trip to face Kaunas at the ground where Scotland lost their Euro 2004 qualifier. Winners of the tie will be one step away from the lucrative group stages of the Champions League. FBK, second in the Lithuanian League, got the perfect preparation for Celtic when they defeated Sviesa Vilnius 1-0 at home. Lithuania international Giedrius Barevielus netted the only goal of the game in the 75th minute. Kaunas manager Sergie Borovsky said: "It was obvious some of the players, and myself, were thinking about the match against Celtic. "But we managed to get the victory and it was a good way to prepare for a very important match." Scouts from Parkhead watched the game and will report back to O'Neill. They will inform him that Kaunas will be missing key midfielder Marius Bezykornovas for Wednesday's game. He has failed to recover after picking up an injury during their win against Faoroes minnows HB Torshavn in the first qualifying round.
