A Latvian basketball player collapsed on the court during a top division Swedish league game and later was announced dead Tuesday, the Swedish Basketball Federation said.
Latvian international Raimonds Jumikis, 23, collapsed during the game playing for Akropol against Jamtland. He was pronounced dead at Karolinska hospital, the federation said in a statement.
"We are in a state of shock. This is not something you think can happen to an athlete and nothing that you ever can be prepared for," said Kenth Johansson, chairman of the Swedish basketball league.
Jumikis is the second athlete in Sweden to die while playing in the last two weeks. A fourth-division soccer player died after collapsing during a training session on Jan. 27.
In January, Hungary international Miklos Feher died after collapsing on the field during a Portuguese league soccer match.
