Polish president will not dissolve Parliament

Poland's conservative President Lech Kaczynski announced Monday that he will not dissolve Parliament, ending hours of suspense and speculation that he could call early elections, less than five months after the last legislative vote.

"I do not see a basis for dissolving Parliament," Kaczynski said in a live televised address to the nation.

Polish news agency PAP sent tremors through political circles by reporting earlier Monday that the president was close to taking a decision to dissolve the Legislature.

Such a move would have come as a shock because the minority, ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) Party earlier this month formed an alliance with far-right Catholic and populist parties.

The accord, signed after weeks of political chaos caused by PiS's inability to form a coalition with a parliamentary majority, was seen as a move that made the prospect of early elections more remote.
