Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and
Pakistan.

Mr Solana and Mr. Holbrooke discussed recent developments in the region and in particular in view of the preparation of the elections in Afghanistan, which are due to take place on 20 August. They also exchanged of views on the situation in Pakistan after their separate visits to both countries last
week.

Mr Solana reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to the stabilisation of Afghanistan and its support for the celebration of credible elections. In view of this, the EU is deploying a robust
election monitoring team lead by Mr Philippe Morillon. In this regard the EUPOL ESDP mission has also been engaged in providing special training for Afghan police for forthcoming elections.

Both Mr Solana and Mr. Holbrooke also had an opportunity to discuss how best to continue supporting Pakistan overcoming the refugees crisis, after the security operation in the Swat Valley.
Mr Solana, who last week visited Pakistan, confirmed the engagement of the EU during his meetings with the President, Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister.

The EU and US have increased cooperation in both countries in order to help addressing the challenging situation they face.
