Copenhagen: Discussions continue into the night

At this moment, political leaders from the world’s largest countries are sitting in Copenhagen negotiating a global response to the threat of climate change. With only one day left of the UN Climate Change Conference, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso called the meeting earlier this afternoon, in order to get the discussions back on track.

Earlier in the evening, Fredrik Reinfeldt said that it was time to make serious progress in the negotiations and that discussion should no longer be hung up on references to formalities, which had hampered the conference for far too long.
“Now the leaders are here, now it is time to show responsibility”, said Mr Reinfeldt then.
 
Around the negotiating table, Mr Reinfeldt and Mr Barroso are joined by political leaders and representatives from the African Union, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, G77, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Russia, South Africa, United Kingdom, the UN and the USA, among others.
 
The meeting looks set to continue into the early hours of the morning.
