Official Data on Unemployment in Russia Unemployment in Russia, calculated by the State Statistics Committee according to standards of the International Labour Organization, fell 1.7 percent to 5.87 million people in July from June, Prime Tass news agency reported on Monday. That's 8.3 percent of the country's economically active population. Only 1.005 million of these unemployed have registered officially to receive benefits and get assistance from the state in job seeking. Compared with July 2000, the number of unemployed shrunk by 18.4 percent, while the number of officially registered unemployed rose by 1.5 percent. The State Statistics Committee estimated Russia's economically active population at 71 million people in July, about half of the country's total population.
