The most destructive virus attack

Investigators said Friday that a Taiwan hacker has admitted creating the so-called Chernobyl virus that ravaged computers worldwide, but a lack of any local plaintiffs made it difficult to charge him, according to Reuters. Police said Chen Ing-hau, a 24-year-old information engineer now serving mandatory military service, was questioned but not charged and the probe hinged on finding victims. Police, according to Reuters, also said no infections had been reported in Taiwan. The Chernobyl, or CIH, virus is the most destructive virus attack yet. On Monday, it slammed South Korea and Turkey, crashing more than a half a million computers by reformatting hard drives and, in some cases, zapping a key chip on the computers_ motherboards. The U.S. saw perhaps 10,000 cases, mainly in universities and with individual users at home.
