A new world ski flying record
Finnish ski jumper Matti Hautamaki has won the penultimate World Cup event in Planica, Slovenia, but Poland's Adam Malysz has become the first man to win the World Cup overall title three years in a row. Hautamaki had jumps of 214 and 221 meters for a total of 433.5 points. Malysz, known as the Flying Pole, was second, 1.2 points back. Martin Hoellwarth of Austria finished third, with Sven Hannawald of Germany fourth and Veli-Matti Lindstroem of Finland fifth. Hautamaki had also set a new world ski flying record in practice with a leap of 228 meters, 50 centimeters, eclipsing his own world record by one meter. However, Malysz ended the season with the World Cup championship, with a total of 1,307 points in 26 events. Hannawald is second, 152 points back (1,155 points) with Austrian Andreas Widhoelzl third (1,016 points).
