Fiber-Optic Internet Penki Will Celebrate its 22nd Birthday

Published: 28 October 2020 y., Wednesday

What date should be considered fiber's birthday? Perhaps, 1621, when Snell's Law was formulated, which describes the refraction of lightwave at the border of two media? Alternatively, 1840, when physicists Daniel Colladon and Jacques Babinet first Colladon demonstrated for the first time the guiding of light in a liquid jet of water. Maybe 1934, when Norman R. French invented the optical telephone system, in which voice signals could be transmitted over a network of optical lines made from rods of glass.

All these discoveries influenced the development of the fiber-optic industry. Today the scope of fiber-optic application is quite wide: medicine, lighting engineering, and of course telecommunications.

In Lithuania, the era of fiber-optic Internet began on October 28, 1998, when Penkių kontinentų komunikacijų centras, a member of the Penki Kontinentai Group, for the first time in Lithuania offered its customers the fastest fiber-optic Internet. So this day, we will celebrate the birthday of the Penki network, but also the fiber-optic Internet in Lithuania!

The fiber-optic networks in the telecommunications industry have revolutionized access to the Internet. Initially, the Internet speed in Lithuania reached only 9.6 Kb/s. In 2001, with the introduction of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology, it grew from 256 to 512 Kb/s. Fiber-optic networks have increased the speed to 10 Mb/s. Today, speed has practically no limits. It can go up to 10 GB/s with powerful hardware. Penki network tested such speed in 2017 for the first time in Lithuania.
