IBC 2015: from up-to-date video cameras to virtual reality

Published: 25 September 2015 y., Friday

In the middle of September, Amsterdam hosted the 48th international electronic media and entertainment industry exhibition-conference IBC 2015. When opening the event, Michael Crimp, President of IBC, emphasized that the electronic media sector is rapidly changing and is no longer the way it was five years ago. The customers are also changing: they only want to see the content that they want to see and they know precisely when and where they want to see it.

More than 1,800 companies introduced their latest products and services to the visitors of the exhibition: from video cameras to codecs, from processors to laptops, from virtualization to virtual reality. The program of the conference consisted of four parts: technological development, content development innovations, television broadcasting and business models. More than 250 experts from various countries shared their experiences on the topics. However, 4D resolution, Multiscreen, High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies, Internet Protocol (IP) television and High Efficiency Video Coding standard received most attention during this year’s event.

This was the first year, when a delegation of the group of companies Penki Kontinentai visited the exhibition. Its representatives were most interested in the latest IP television products introduced at the event by more than 100 companies from all over the world. “Being one of the first IPTV service providers in Lithuania, we always look for new products offered by global IPTV developers. At this year’s exhibition, we paid particular attention to Time Shifting solutions that could help us ensure even smoother provision of this service to our customers,” said Tomas Okmanas, Head of the System Administration Department.

Specialists from Lithuania were also interested in new possibilities of transmitting video content to mobile devices. According to T. Okmanas, this is highly relevant in terms of high definition video. “The opportunity to watch broadcasts on a smart phone or tablet PC is no longer big news. The more important task today is ensuring the opportunity to watch high definition broadcasts on mobile devices. HEVC standard has offered new possibilities in the field; it reduces the stream in half and protects it against interferences. Moreover, HEVC offers new possibilities for the broadcasting of 4K definition content,” explained the representative of Penki Kontinentai.

The delegation attending the exhibition not only visited the stands of long-time partners such as ARRIS, Cisco Systems, Akamai and Microsoft, but also attended presentations organized by manufacturers of video recording and direct broadcast equipment, including video cameras, virtual TV studios, camera carrying quadcopters, etc. The most interesting presentations and events of the exhibition were captured by IBC TV offering direct broadcasts on screens installed in the exhibition halls.
